What is engagement rate?

Definition

Engagement rate is the volume of interactions a piece of content earned relative to its exposure, calculated as interactions divided by followers, reach, or impressions.

There are three standard formulas, and they answer different questions. Engagement by followers (interactions divided by follower count) measures how alive an owned audience is. Engagement by reach (interactions divided by unique viewers) measures how compelling the content was to those who saw it. Engagement by impressions divides by total views instead. The same post can look excellent on one formula and mediocre on another, so the first question to ask of any reported rate is which formula produced it.

The numerator is as unstable as the denominator. What counts as an interaction differs by platform: saves and shares exist in some places and not others, video views are counted at different thresholds, and platform distribution mechanics push baseline rates apart by an order of magnitude. A healthy rate on LinkedIn and a healthy rate on TikTok are simply different numbers.

That is the comparability trap: comparing a 4 percent rate on one platform to a 0.5 percent rate on another, or across two tools that silently use different formulas, produces confident nonsense. The defensible uses are narrow: same platform, same formula, tracked over time, or benchmarked against competitors measured identically.

How this shows up in Waldo

Waldo stores the raw interaction counts and metrics for tracked entities permanently rather than serving a pre-baked rate, so you can compute whichever formula fits the question and hold it constant across brands and time. When a number looks odd, the underlying posts are one link away.
