What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Definition

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of shaping content and its distribution so that generative AI systems draw on it, and represent it faithfully, when they synthesize answers.

The term entered circulation through a 2023 academic paper that tested how changes to web content affected its visibility in generative engine responses, and marketers adopted it as AI Overviews and chat assistants began taking share from traditional search. It is often used interchangeably with answer engine optimization; where a distinction is drawn, AEO targets direct answers and assistants, while GEO addresses the broader class of systems that synthesize a response from many retrieved sources.

What the early research and practice suggest: content with citations, quotations, statistics, and clear structure gets included in generated answers more often, and presence on the third-party sites engines retrieve from matters as much as your own pages. But different engines behave differently, results shift with every model update, and the effect sizes reported in studies are averages that may not survive contact with your category.

That is the pitfall practitioners hit: the evidence base is thin and moves fast. A finding from one study, one engine, and one month often fails to replicate, yet an industry of certainty has grown on top of it. The durable version of GEO looks unglamorous, genuinely useful content, structured for machine readers, with claims a system can verify, measured over quarters rather than weeks.

How this shows up in Waldo

Waldo’s stake in this shift is structural rather than promotional: it assumes machines are now readers, so its brand, category, and audience data ships as structured output with sources attached, over an API and a native MCP server. It does not track which sources generative engines cite. The overlap is a habit: claims a machine can follow back to the evidence.
