What are verbatims?

Definition

Verbatims are direct, word-for-word quotes from real people, drawn from surveys, reviews, support logs, or social conversation and kept in their original language.

The term comes from survey research, where answers to open-ended questions were transcribed verbatim and kept separate from the coded, countable data. Focus group transcripts extended the habit. Today the largest source of verbatims is not research at all: it is the open social web, where people volunteer unfiltered opinions about brands and categories all day.

Verbatims matter because real language carries information that summaries flatten. A theme labeled price sensitivity is inert; a customer writing that they love the product but cancel every December tells you the mechanism. They also persuade: a stakeholder who has ignored three charts will lean in when shown eight real customers saying the same sentence. Copywriters mine them too, because phrasing that came from the audience tends to test well with the audience.

Cherry-picking is what ruins them. A vivid quote is evidence that one person said one thing, and decks routinely launder anecdotes into strategy by choosing quotes first and finding a theme second. The honest pattern is the reverse: cluster first, count the cluster, then quote from inside it with the count attached.

How this shows up in Waldo

This is exactly what /audiences/{id}/conversations returns: verbatims from real audience conversation, clustered by theme so every quote arrives with the size of the pattern behind it. Each one links to its source, and because Waldo stores everything permanently, the quote survives even if the original post is deleted.
