What is competitor analysis?

Definition

Competitor analysis is the systematic assessment of rival brands, their positioning, products, pricing, messaging, and activity, used to sharpen your own strategy.

The frameworks are old and still useful: SWOT for a structured inventory, Porter’s five forces for the shape of the category, positioning maps for where brands sit in buyers’ minds. Modern practice adds layers those frameworks predate: live messaging and creative analysis, share of voice, pricing page archaeology, hiring patterns, and product release cadence.

The craft is in the sourcing. Competitors describe themselves in websites and earnings calls, but they reveal themselves in what they spend against: the ads they keep running, the angles they retire, the landing pages they quietly rewrite. Reviews of competitor products are an underused gold mine, because they document the gaps a rival’s customers feel, in the customers’ own words.

The pitfall is the static deck. A competitor analysis compiled annually describes the competitor of last year, and most of its shelf life is spent being wrong. The valuable version is continuous: knowing within a day that a rival launched a campaign, changed pricing, or repositioned a product page, because a response is only useful while the move is fresh. The fix is not a bigger deck; it is a smaller one that stays current.

How this shows up in Waldo

Waldo keeps the analysis current instead of archival: tracked brands refresh daily, /brands/{id}/ads/active returns a competitor’s live ad set, and /brands/{id}/lp-changes catches the landing page rewrites that signal repositioning. Brand, category, and audience sit in one surface, so the competitive picture and the customer picture stay connected.
