What is media monitoring?
Definition
Media monitoring is the continuous tracking of news, broadcast, and online sources for mentions of a brand, its competitors, or the issues it cares about.
This is the oldest tool in the communications kit. Press clipping bureaus, rooms of people reading newspapers with scissors, date to the nineteenth century; broadcast monitoring followed radio and television; and the web collapsed the whole industry into software that scans sources continuously. Social listening is its descendant, but monitoring remains its own discipline, centered on news, trade press, and broadcast rather than conversation.
The daily uses are crisis detection, coverage reporting, executive and client briefings, and issue tracking for regulatory or reputational threats. Metrics are mention counts, outlet reach and authority, and message pull-through. Speed matters more here than anywhere else in the measurement stack: the value of knowing about a damaging story decays by the hour, which is why monitoring is the layer PR teams keep on all night.
The pitfall is alert fatigue. Untuned keyword feeds bury the one story that matters under hundreds that do not, brands with common-word names drown in false positives, and a mention in an outlet nobody reads gets counted the same as a front-page story unless someone weights for it. Query tuning is unglamorous work, and it is the difference between a monitoring function and a noise machine.
How this shows up in Waldo
Waldo’s monitoring layer spans live social platforms and the open web, with tracked entities refreshed daily and every mention stored permanently, so coverage that gets edited or deleted at the source stays in the record, which matters most in exactly the crisis moments monitoring exists for. Raw mentions or the analysis layer per call, with every output linked to its sources.
